Background of the study
Nigerian Pidgin has emerged as a vibrant and versatile language form in digital communication, particularly on platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook. Widely used across various social and educational backgrounds, Nigerian Pidgin offers a flexible medium that blends indigenous linguistic elements with global digital practices (Oluwaseun, 2023). Its informal nature allows users to express humor, emotion, and cultural nuances that might be constrained in standard English. As WhatsApp and Facebook become primary channels for daily interactions, the integration of Nigerian Pidgin has significant implications for identity formation, language evolution, and cultural continuity (Afolabi, 2024). However, this informal usage also raises questions about language standardization and the potential impact on formal language skills. The study seeks to evaluate how digital communication platforms facilitate the use and evolution of Nigerian Pidgin, and to explore the broader effects of these practices on language development and cultural identity (Balogun, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite widespread use, there is limited empirical research on the role of Nigerian Pidgin in digital communication on platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook. The informal nature of Nigerian Pidgin in these contexts may lead to variations in language use that differ significantly from traditional forms, potentially impacting language education and standardization (Okeke, 2024). These variations raise concerns about the long-term effects on language proficiency and cultural identity. This study aims to evaluate the use of Nigerian Pidgin on digital platforms, identify the challenges and opportunities presented by its informal use, and assess its overall impact on language development in Nigeria.
